How can ideas from biological and clinical research help us understand the way organizations work?

On October 8, 2026, at noon, Dr. Michael Hsu will present an invited research seminar at Cal Poly Pomona, titled From Genes to Organizations: Using Co-Expression Logic to Understand Management Configurations.

Drawing on his background in basic science, clinical research, and organizational improvement, Dr. Hsu will explore the connection between gene co-expression—patterns of gene activity that vary together—and organizational co-occurrence, which examines features that repeatedly appear together across observations.

An organizational case study from his doctoral research at Vanderbilt University will illustrate how examining stakeholder perspectives, service needs, and operational practices can inform practical recommendations. The presentation will also consider how organizational models can evolve as new evidence becomes available, including the potential role of AI in supporting that process.

For Dr. Hsu, the seminar brings together his work as an educator and organizational researcher, connecting questions across disciplines with challenges encountered in practice.

The presentation slides are now available to preview ahead of the seminar. Explore the research background, analytical framework, and case study below.
